Protection Island Welcome

Protection Island is located in the harbour of Nanaimo, B.C.  It is part of the City of Nanaimo with approximately 360 properties, each connected to municipal water and sewer.  This neighbourhood offers peace and relaxation, with all city conveniences just minutes away.

  • 350 full-time residents, young families, professionals and retirees

How do you get here?

  • Regularly scheduled passenger ferry

  • Private boat or kayak


How do you get around?

  • By bike, golf cart, car/truck or with a wheelbarrow

Where can you moor your boat?

  • Mud Bay Community Dock, operated by the Protection Island Neighbourhood Association (annual fee)

  • Other privately owned docks (rates and availability vary)

​What about garbage & recycling?

  • Island Supply picks up garbage & recycling from the island

  • Islanders can also take garbage & recycling to town. Bins are located behind the Wharfinger's office

What about groceries?

  • Island Supply delivers groceries from Thrifty Foods at Port Place

Where can I park my vehicle in town?

  • Several parking lots are located within walking distance of the Protection Island ferry. Click here for a map of all locations.

What's there to do?

  • The Dinghy Dock, Canada's only floating restaurant & pub

  • Beacon House community hall

  • Library

  • Community garden

  • Sports court (basketball, pickle ball, hockey, kids playbox)

  • Art & music classes

  • Museum


What services are available?

  • BC Hydro, Telus, Shaw and the City of Nanaimo have service vehicles on the island

What if there is an emergency?

  • Nanaimo's Fire Station #7 is located on Protection, equipped with a fully trained team of first responders, fire truck and ambulance
