PROTECTION ISLAND is a small community in a park-like setting, with all the conveniences of a city just minutes away. There are also many services, amenities and trades people on the island itself.

Accommodation

Time-Out Oceanside B&B

Your hosts, Doug and Marilyn, have lived on Protection Island since 2002.

They welcome guests to stay in a private suite within their charming ocean view home and enjoy the island's many beautiful parks and beaches.

Other Accommodation

Many residents provide accommodation in their home or on their property.

From a private room or suite, to a separate cottage or entire home. From waterfront or ocean view, to a forested park-like setting. There is a place to suit everyone. 

Arts & Culture
Beacon House - Community Centre, Library, Museum

The Beacon House is owned by the City of Nanaimo and is an integral part of the island's community. It serves as a Community Centre, and includes the Public Library and Museum.

                                   Many events take place here, such as:

  • Arts & Craft fairs

  • Bake sales

  • Special interest classes

Protection Island Cultural & Historical Society

The PICHS presents a permanent historical display of artifacts, photographs and maps as well as a comprehensive archive which includes hundreds of documents related to Protection Island's history.

Home, Garden & Pet Care

Need help organizing, decluttering or tackling big cleaning jobs? Or maybe you need someone to walk your dog, or watch your pet while you're away. There are people here to help with all that!

PINA is an elected group of your neighbours who get together to manage

Protection Island assets, organize quality services, and work to resolve island issues.

The Lion’s Club of Protection Island organizes and coordinates community events and activities.

Canada's only registered floating pub & restaurant located in Nanimo's harbour.

Family–friendly, serving lunch and dinner, with live evening entertainment.

Health & Safety
Block Watch

Block Watch is a free community-based crime prevention program administered by the local police department.  

On Protection Island, it's all about neighbours helping neighbours take a proactive approach to crime prevention and safety.  

The City of Nanaimo operates Fire Station #7 on PROTECTION Island. This on-call station is serviced by a team of local volunteer firefighters.

In the event of an emergency, please call 9-1-1 and tell the operator you are on PROTECTION Island.

Recreation
Parks, Beaches, Playing Fields & Playground

Residents and visitors alike can enjoy the island's three waterfront parks, six inland parks and ten beaches, each accessible by road or trail.

The island also has an outdoor tennis court, basketball court, volleyball, playing field and kids' playground

The Douglas Island Garden Society (D.I.G.S.) was founded by a horticulturist who oversees the garden with support from volunteers of all ages.

D.I.G.S. hosts many events throughout the year, including:

  • 'Little Diggers': a fun interactive workshop for island children

  • Plant & Bake Sales (seasonal)

Trades & Construction

The island is home to many service providers, as well as professional trades people, who can help build, renovate, repair and maintain your residence and property. Such services include:

  • Carpentry

  • Electrical

  • Plumbing

  • Masonry

  • Renovations

  • Gardening / Yard Maintenance

  • Industrial Sewing (sail/canvas repair)

  • Odd Jobs

Transportation & Barging

Protection Island Ferry

This privately-run foot passenger ferry leaves the island's Dinghy Dock Pub & Restaurant every hour on the hour.

The ferry leaves the Port of Nanaimo Boat Basin (N dock) 10 minutes past the hour.

Barge Services - Island Supply

Island Supply provides pick-up and delivery from anywhere on Vancouver Island right to your door on Protection (i.e. appliances, building materials, golf carts, groceries).

They also provide removal services of similar items, including recycling and garbage, from Protection Island.

Barge Services - Wardill Marine

Wardill Marine has two types of barges for hire to transport your medium-to-large items.

  • Very large barge can transport two industrial vehicles (i.e. dump truck, moving van) at a time.

  • Medium-sized barge can transport a ca.
